i found myself looking at the philippine linux users group’s membership guidlines page today 6:57 am. prestigious organization they run. seems like they’re only interested in heroic people there.
oh, and please welcome my new category “second glance still to come”. where i’ll be posting mostly, my bitter first impressions.

Heh. You should check Ubuntu’s guidelines as well: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NewMemberHowto
The heroic part is a new perspective from me, but from experience in dealing with organizations contribution that is sustained is a really good thing: Kaingin removes members who don’t meet their expectation (though the bar isn’t that high) and CompSAt should be getting one next year.
Ubuntu-PH is quite different though, since it doesn’t have any membership guidelines and just points really interested people to the official Ubuntu membership process above. Yes, there are pros and cons to this, but I definitely prefer this compared to memberships that have no substance at all.

yep! you’re correct. and before anything else. posts made under this category are statements i’m willing to take back too for whatever reason.
the good thing i find about guidlines (in any organization for that matter) is that these are not forced on aynone at all (at least those who doesn’t wanna get involved). i read the ubuntu membership guidline and actually had the impression that it’s something quite doable! the person who wrote that guidline, wrote that in a way that appeals to people who still aren’t a part of the community he belongs. it’s an honest invitation with a warm “you will belong” feeling to it. and his community is an international, distro-specific lug-kinda-thingy to boot.
sadly, i didn’t have that same opinion with the plug guidline, and i know i’ve hurt every plug members (who happens to read this) too by even posting that entry in the first place. but for me, (honestly for me) organizations like these are supposed to help and address as many people as possible instead of alienating themselves and marginalizing the exceptional seeds from the average ones. i reckon they should pre-pick the polititians first in a group and give him a regform to insure the continuance of the organization. they are afterall, the best fakers when it comes to public service. and among the first, and loudest to show their contribution.
in the end, i do acknowledge that these guidlines serve as a filter for the truly passionate and dedicated, and that it is with the best regards for any group to formulate certain criteria to protect and maintain their interest.

I suppose seeing this so early in the morning can get the fingers pumped up to comment
(the timestamps seem to be off though. misconfiguration perhaps?).
I think we both agree on the same thing (which is awesome
). I guess I’ll just point out that PLUG can help people without making them members first. It somehow feels like the Ubuntu community, but with a slightly different NewMemberHowto

:D hehehe speaking of timestamps, i never really figured the time control offset thingy. even until now.
i was really thrilled when i was reading the feedback because i rarely get comments that are compelling. (was actually thinking to start a new post since i also noticed the lengthy reply too while i was still typing it.. laughs out loud) afterall, this is a sensitive discourse from the start. and seeing that i’ve already done damage, i figured i’d say something other than “i don’t care. girls rock!”
it’s a good way to mess up your karma, but i’m liking the idea of posting my first impressions too regardless of it’s nature. i’ll eat my words/take them back/whatever too if necessary.
more posts to come!
cheers,
- niel

Offset can be set in the options section of Wordpress’ admin panel.
Actually, I think this is a nice post. Rough and pretty distasteful, but looks to carry a good message anyway. I think there have been discussions about the membership guidelines in the PLUG mailing lists before too, so it’s not that surprising.
I’m thinking of posting something on this in my blog too. Real world calls now though, so I’ll have to put it to later

Oh wait offset seems to work now! Awesome!

weeeeee weeeeee weeeeee! so the time is correct now? great! great! you know, i really find things like this troublesome 0 configuring and stuff like that! so as much as possible, i refrain from doing any changes to my blog.. except on occasions when i’m really inspired to do it. hehehehe.
anyway, keep your blog posts coming too.
